Pharmacists in Nova Scotia will soon be able to administer vaccines by injection and monitor drug therapy under proposed amendments to the province’s Pharmacy Act.
The rationale behind the proposed amendments is that by utilizing the numerous qualified pharmacists in the province, doctors will be free to concentrate on other areas of health care. By doing so, more patients will be tended to and will be able to receive the care they need.
Health Minister Maureen MacDonald states, “we in the health-care system, like many other professions, are facing a demographic crunch. This is part of expanding the health-care team ... and giving them (pharmacists) a greater scope of practice in order to help patients."
It is anticipated that the first stage of qualified pharmacists will be able to carry out their new duties some time this year.
